While her co-worker watched, the nursing home aide was videotaped stuffing latex gloves into the mouth of a 96-year-old woman who was suffering from dementia. The abuse was caught on a camera, which the victim’s family had secretly placed in the room. The victim died on July 27 from Alzheimer’s disease and congestive heart failure.

The 28-year-old co-defendant remains at large. The two women were fired from Quail Creed Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

It is crucial for Texas nursing homes to hire kind, caring and skilled workers who will provide quality care to elderly patients. The facility must also properly train and supervise its workers since it is common for unsupervised or unqualified employees to abuse or neglect patients.

If you have a loved one in a Texas nursing home, there are steps you can take to help protect them:

  • Visit the facility often and to get to know the staff.
  • Inquire about the care your loved one receives.
  • Discuss with management any physical injuries your loved one has suffered and call the authorities immediately if you believe abuse has occurred.
  • Speak with a skilled nursing home abuse attorney who will help you understand your legal rights and options.
