We want to continue to keep you updated on the recent food poisoning outbreak of cyclospora. Last week we shared how Texas has the most cases, and this week the amount of cyclospora food poisoning cases in Texas has gone from 204 to 250. The total amount of cyclospora cases in the nation is now up to almost 600 people.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention still isn’t sure what is causing the food poisoning outbreak, but it does have some important advice about what you can do to prevent food poisoning:
- Keep eating fruits and vegetables: Even though cyclospora has been found in bagged salad mixes, it’s important to stay healthy and continue to eat servings of fruit and vegetables everyday.
- Wash produce thoroughly: You should always wash produce before eating or cooking it. Rinse it under hot water and scrub firm vegetables and fruit with a produce brush.
- Clean your hands and cutting boards before and after cooking: Bacteria that leads to food poisoning is easily spread when people forget to wash their hands and food preparation areas. Make sure you wash your hands and cutting boards under hot water with antibacterial soap before and after handling food.
- Store food immediately: After cutting vegetables, fruit or meat, it’s important to either cook it right away or store it in the refrigerator as soon as possible. Remember never store fruit and vegetables near raw meat.
The common symptoms of cyclospora food poisoning are watery diarrhea (most common), loss of appetite, weight loss, cramping, nausea and fatigue. If you or a loved one were the victim of food poisoning, you deserve justice and compensation for your emotional and physical turmoil.
