Recently an Amarillo, Texas man was in life-threatening condition after he was hit by a suspected drunk driver. The 22-year-old was hit by a car and the driver fled the scene. The suspect was found later and booked in Potter County Jail for failure to stop and render aid, and intoxicated assault.
The Texas Department of Transportation states that every 20 minutes someone in Texas is either hurt or killed in an alcohol-related crash. There are more drunk driving accidents from May to August than any other time of year. During the summer of 2011, there were 321 fatal alcohol-related crashes in Texas.
That is why this summer the TXDOT is campaigning for residents who are going to drink to get a P.A.S.S: Person Appointed to Stay Sober.
A National Highway Traffic Safety Administration survey states that 40 percent of drivers who drank alcohol thought they were ok to have three or more drinks in a 2-hour period before driving, and some believed they could have five or more drinks and still drive.
But the risk of a driver with BAC between .08 and .10 is at least 11 times greater than for those with a BAC of zero. Even small amounts of alcohol can affect your driving abilities.
The TXDOT is urging residents to avoid accidents, fines, jail time and hurting themselves or others by getting a P.A.S.S before taking a drink this summer.
