- Hydroplaning. This occurs when the car loses contact with the pavement because of a layer of water and the car is literally traveling on top of the water. This can be a terrifying experience for the driver who will feel as though they cannot control the car.
What Drivers Can And Should Do To Avoid Accidents In Wet Conditions
Although there are no guarantees that every accident can be avoided, there are some steps drivers can take to reduce the likelihood of an accident in wet conditions.
- Don’t rush. Leaving extra travel time can take a lot of pressure off of a driver to try to maintain normal speeds in slick conditions. Driving slower gives a driver (and vehicle) more time to react and respond.
- Leave room. One of the problems drivers face in slick conditions is stopping in enough time to avoid hitting the car ahead of them. Leaving some extra room between your car and the car in front of you is a better idea.
- Maintain the car. Make sure the headlights are working, the wipers are in good condition, the brakes are functioning properly, and the tires have enough tread in them.
- No “cruising.” Cruise control may be convenient for dry road conditions but may not be appropriate in wet or slick road events because the likelihood of losing control of the car is greater.
