How to Prevent Brain InjuriesTraumatic brain injuries occur often and if you are a victim it can dramatically impact your life. The most common causes of TBIs are car accidents, falls, sports injuries and violence. Each year 50,000 people die from brain injuries and 80,000 to 90,000 people experience long term disability.

But brain injuries can be prevented. Here are some tips from the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control on how you can prevent traumatic brain injuries:

  • Always wear a seatbelt: Most brain injuries occur during a car accident when someone wasn’t wearing a seatbelt. It’s especially vital to make sure your children are strapped into their car seat or buckled up.

  • Wear a helmet when you are:

    • Riding a bike, motorcycle, snowmobile or all-terrain vehicle

    • Playing a contact sport

    • Using in-line skates or riding a skateboard

    • Playing baseball or softball

    • Riding a horse

    • Skiing or snowboarding

  • Do what you can to prevent falls, such as:

    • Use a step stool to reach objects on high shelves

    • Install and use stairway handrails

    • Use safety gates at the top and bottom of stairs when young children are around

    • Remove tripping hazards

    • Use non-slip mats in the bathtub

    • Ensure the surface of playgrounds are made of shock-absorbing material before allowing your child to play on it.

Even if you do all you can to prevent brain injuries, TBIs can still occur due to the negligence of someone else.
