A mother and her 10-year-old daughter were killed in San Antonio last month when their car was hit by a drunk-driving suspect who was twice convicted of driving while intoxicated.
The mother and daughter were waiting in their car while her fiancé was fixing the car’s flat tire on the eastbound shoulder of Interstate 10. The Jeep Cherokee ran into their vehicle and pushed the car 131 feet, according to police. The mother was dead at the scene, and the daughter passed away a few hours later in the hospital. The fiancé was not injured.
The driver of the other car was given a field sobriety test and arrested. He is in jail on two counts of intoxication manslaughter with a bail set at $150,000. He was previously arrested in 2006 and 2008 on DWI charges.
Family and friends of the victims were in shock. The mother worked part-time at The Basement Bar and Lounge. The Basement’s owner emphasized that drivers like that are the reason why they don’t over serve, and call cabs for those who are intoxicated.
They had planned a birthday celebration for the mother at The Basement on the day she died, and still held it in her honor and to raise money for the family.
