Dallas Cowboys football player Josh Brent now faces a Sept. 23 trial on a charge of intoxication manslaughter after he was involved in a Dallas car accident that killed his teammate Jerry Brown.
The Dallas drunk driving accident occurred on Dec. 8 when Brent was driving with Brown as a passenger. The accident happened when the speeding car flipped at least once after hitting a curb. Brent had a blood-alcohol level more than twice the legal limit, the Dallas Morning News reported.
A Texas grand jury indicted the defensive lineman in December in the wake the crash. The charge carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Brent was freed from jail on $100,000 bond and is required to wear an ankle bracelet that monitors his blood alcohol level.
Brent was in his third seasons with the Dallas Cowboys. The Dallas Cowboys recently announced that Brent will not be playing for them this upcoming season. Brown was one of Brent’s close friends, and they were living together. Brown had just recently joined the Dallas Cowboys roster.
In 2009, Brent pleaded guilty to a DUI charge after he was arrested for speeding while driving under the influence with a suspended license, according to court records obtained by The Associated Press.
