The University of Texas at Austin has become one of eleven partner institutions of higher learning to participate in a $17 million study of traumatic brain injuries (TBI). The study is being spearheaded by the U.S. Department of Defense, which seeks more information and better treatment options for the many combat veterans who have suffered concussions and other traumatic brain injuries. However, researchers from all the partnering institutions, as well as experienced Texas traumatic brain injury attorneys, believe their work will help all TBI patients.
The award was officially launched on October 1 and will last for five years. The purpose of the initiative is to improve traumatic brain injury research at all steps of the research process.
At UT-Austin, psychology professors Alex Valadka and David Schnyer will work to collect data on traumatic brain injuries from a vast collection of studies and databases and to integrate them into one standardized data set. When the work is finished, TBI researchers throughout the country and in many other nations will be able to search the data set to look for patterns in TBI injury, severity, outcomes and treatment effectiveness – making it possible to identify possibilities in cause and treatment that did not exist before.
Other groups involved in the study will work with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to improve the rules for clinical trials of new TBI treatments, the tracking of patients who participate in the trials, and the collection and analysis of data from the clinical trials. Still others will focus on creating new diagnosis and treatment tools.
