Last month, Rich Products Corp. recalled all of the frozen snack foods produced out of its Waycross, Ga., plant because of possible E. coli contamination, which can cause serious food poisoning. This recall includes the brands Market Day and Farm Rich, which is sold at Walmart stores across the country, and the strain has been identified in Farm Rich frozen mini pizza slices and Farm Rich frozen chicken quesadillas.
So far, 32 people in 18 states have been infected with a strain of E. coli linked to these foods, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than one-third of those infected have required hospitalization, and two have developed a type of kidney failure associated with this strain of E. coli.
Perhaps the most upsetting part of this outbreak is how disproportionately it has affected children: 81 percent of infected people have been 21 years old or younger. So far, three people in Texas have gotten ill from the bacteria.
The CDC recommends checking your freezer for the recalled Farm Rich, Market Day and Schwan’s brand frozen food products and dispose of the product immediately, especially if you have children under the age of five, older adults or people with weakened immune systems living in your home.
